Het pakket Matlab- aangevuld met toolboxen ontwikkeld door The Mathworks B.V., in combinatie met verschillende toolboxen die open source beschikbaar zijn, is dermate flexibel en tegelijkertijd specialistisch dat hiervoor geen vergelijkbaar alternatief bestaat. Naast de mogelijkheden die het pakket biedt om zelf experimentele- of analysesoftware te bouwen is er een groot aantal toolboxen beschikbaar dat door The Mathworks B.V. zelf wordt ontwikkeld. Ook is er een groot aantal open-source toolboxen dat gebruik maakt van de generieke functionaliteit van Matlab en daar specialistische functionaliteit aan toevoegt. *
